Arkansas Arts Center
April 26–June 9, 2002
"A professor of art at Arkansas State University, this sculptor
makes perplexing work from everyday materials. A past prize winner
in the Arkansas Arts Center Delta Exhibitions, Salvest has been
intriguing Art Center patrons for many years. The art writer, Kim
Levin, offered this description: "Salvest's work speaks plainly.
It is composed of perfectly ordinary objects and simple language.
It has to do with signage, inventory, and quotation. It carries
echoes of folk art, tramp art, craft work, and busy work."
Salvest himself is less succinct and modest, "I recognize my
work to be no more or less than a record of an ongoing effort to
understand myself in relationship to the world around me."
As an artist he is highly acclaimed evidenced by the grants given
to him from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, New York City; the National
Endowment for the Arts; and the Arkansas Arts Council, to name only
a few. " << |
