Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

The Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects the confidentiality of a student's educational record.  Under FERPA, public posting of test scores, grades, evaluations and other educational assessments is prohibited.  The use of randomly assigned codes for each student is not advised as the code may be deciphered by others.  Release of grades or scores via any method that does not allow for positive identification of the student (email, telephone) is also prohibited.

Parents or guardians may have access to a student's record only  with written consent from the student.  This consent is provided by filing a Student Consent Form for Parental/Guardian Access with the Office of the Registrar.    Please note that there are strict  procedures that must be followed by faculty and staff even though this consent has been filed.  More detailed information concerning FERPA and the Student Consent Form for Parental/Guardian Access will be made available to Deans and Chairs for distribution to faculty as soon as possible.  Additional questions may be addressed to Jerry Jones, Registrar, or the Office of Academic Affairs.
