In the background:
Proof that the Penrose kite-and-dart apperiodic tiling can be colored with three
colors such that no two tiles sharing
an edge are the same color. Each tile's color
is determined solely by the orientation of the tiles 2.47 times the shorter
side away. The proof is in "A Most Localized 3-Coloring of Penrose Tilings,"
Geombinatorics, (2002) Vol. 12, No. 3,
pp. 117-130.
